National Geographic’s Taboo (Marks of Identity)
For thousands of years, people have marked their bodies to let others know who they are, to announce their tribe, status, or what group they belong to. Some believe modifying the body is a part of being human, that it’s a part of establishing culture. But markings that are normal for some, others may see as extreme.
Taboo is a documentary television series that premiered in 2002 on the National Geographic Channel. The program is an educational look into “taboo” rituals and traditions practiced in some societies, yet forbidden and illegal in others.
